INTER-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATIONS (IGOs) AND WOMEN’S RIGHTS IN RWANDA
Inter-governmental organizations are very focal in advocacy and on women’s rights and have shaped the evolution of culture in Africa, with Rwanda inclusive. The research examined the contribution of inter-governmental organizations on women’s rights awareness. The background of the study, shows different perceptions toward women’s rights awareness with the problem being that the mis-definition of women’s rights makes both genders conflict, women confused on how to handle themselves with the continued women support, and men left to do women work. Specifically, the study sought at finding out the contribution of Inter-Governmental organisations on women’s rights awareness in Rwanda, to assess whether women are aware of their rights and to assess how women’s rights are defined by Rwandan women. Significance of the study was to bring on more light how these inter-Governmental Organisations impacted women in terms of women’s rights and limitation of study was the language barrier and insufficient literature on the case of Rwanda. Scope of the study geographically covered Nyarugenge District, one of the districts that make up Kigali city. The time scope to be covered was ten years from 2008 to 2018 and the content scope was based on examining the contribution of interGovernmental organizations on women’s rights awareness in Rwanda. The relationship between inter-governmental organisations’ contribution and women’s rights awareness produced Pearson correlatiom coefficient r=0.522** and p=0.000 between training and improved education and awareness while advocacy its self is weakly correlated with exposure to opportunities at .116 and p value .310. However, collaboration with other agencies is strongly correlated when it has got with women rights awareness at a p-value .000 which is < 0.005.This indicates that the relationships were all positive and statistically less significant. Each of these elements significantly promote women’s rights awareness when they are improved. There is a need to establish women’s centers in various higher learning institutions for contribution to legalized equal rights between men and women addresses, knowledge increase actions, effort to break down outdated centralistic organization of the local entities and creativities for decentralization of local government, poverty reduction, women empowerment, administration, energy, environment and technological devices with regards to gender equality and women’s rights.
